January 14, 1998 To: Edwin Delattre From: Robert I. Sperber Subject: Suggestions for my reappointment 1998-1999 At our luncheon on December 10 you said I should send you a memo suggesting some activities for the 1998-1999 academic year. My ideas follow in three sections: continuing projects, proposed projects, and funding sources. Continuing Projects A. Center for Economic Education. I would like to remain as a collaborator with Steve EUenwood and Charles White while they pilot their economics education curriculum in twelve Boston schools—elementary, middle and high. If the results are good, I would like to help them, the Financial Executive Institute, and the Federal Reserve to raise the $200,000 per annum needed to create a Center for Economics Education in the School of Education. B. Mobilization for Academic Excellence. The advisory board on which I serve is trying to help the Urban League to increase the number of Boston's minority children attending the exam schools, and to assist those who are accepted to stay in the exam schools. We are concentrating on after school and summer programs for fourth, fifth and sixth graders, and academic help for seventh and eighth graders who have been admitted to die exam schools. C. MassPEP. After some time off this board, I am now back on it and would like to help raise funds, and coordinate the activities of the colleges and universities that help the program. MassPEP serves Chelsea high school students with enrichment activities in mathematics, science, and pre- engineering. D. Civitas. Am organizing programs witii Charles White for a yearly visit by Russian civic educators. Instead of one group this year, there will be two smaller ones. E. BEST. Am co-principal investigator with Gerald Leader from the School of Management of this three year program—1998-1999 will be year two. F. Chelsea Management Team. Having been part of die project from its onset, I would like to stay on the Team as long as possible. G. 802 and 810 Seminars, and Certification programs for SED. I have enjoyed the seminars diis year, and would like to continue conducting them. H. International School Leadership. Having acted as the in-house coordinator for the program I would like to go on with that effort.
