Susaan Straus 23 Valleyspring Road Newton, Massachusetts 02158 October 5, 1982 Dear Bob, Enclosed is your copy of the grant proposal for "A Beginner's Guide to Ending Hunger". I'm in the process of distributing it to various foundations and organizations . Louise and Pat Ruane have given me verbal approval to pilot two sections of it at the high school. I don't yet know what course they plan to put it in. It's my understanding that the administration is supporting this year as the year to address the nuclear issue, and next year will be the year to address the issue of world hunger. Progress! The New York City school system has just instituted a system-wide, K-8 program addressing the issue of world hunger. It's set to happen across all subject areas for a one week period each year in October. They're beginning modestly this year with grades 5, 8, and 10, and some of the materials I've prepared are scheduled for use with the older students. I'm really pleased. I enjoyed reading the Globe article about you, and I hope you're as enthusiastic about your new work as it sounded. Prom down here at the classroom level, the changing of the guard in Brookline has seemed remarkably smooth and uneventful - so far. I miss you! I'm used to being inspired in September! I'll continue to keep you posted on the progress of this endeavor. I'd welcome any input you have on any aspect of it. By the way, the curriculum in draft form is complete (about 250 pages), and if you would like to pore through it, I'd be happy to loan you a copy. Just let me know. Thank you again, Bob, for being the catalyst, the inspiration that launched me toward this goal. This work has added a new and satisfying dimension to my life, and I'm most appreciative of the role you have played. Please feel free to call me if I can answer any questions, or if you have any ideas you'd like to share with me. My best to Edith - Warmly,
