(Boston, Mass.) — Representatives of Boston public schools and Boston-area colleges and universities met Wednesday at Boston University to plan new directions and activities under the 1975 "pairing" agreement established to upgrade the quality of Boston public education. The gathering, prompted by the announcement of the Boston Compact, was presided over by Dr. John R. Silber, president of Boston University and chairman of the Presidents' Steering Committee, the group of college and university presidents and campus coordinators whose institutions are paired with city schools. The Boston Compact, announced Sept. 22 by School Superintendent Robert Spillane, is an agreement among educational, civic, and business leaders to improve the performance of the public school system and foster hiring of the system's graduates. The Compact designated 11 priority areas as work groups for city and higher educational personnel. These priorities range from basic skills to computer literacy, and from the arts to athletics.
