Associated Jewish Philanthropies 72 Franklin Street, Boston 10, Mass. Liberty 2-8080 MEMORANDUM To: George Samansky From: Sidney S. Cohen Date: February 1, 1955 Mr. Oscar Weiss, 69 Callender Street, Dorchester, Columbia 5-1931, representing H'Adrath Israel (Woodrow Avenue) was referred to me by Benjamin Ulin, President. As Chairman of the Building Committee and a Trustee, he has been authorised to sell undeveloped land on Morton Street corner of Verrel Street. The property consists of five parcels covering 16,000 square feet. Several years ago, according to Mr. Weiss, H'Adrath Israel paid $18,000 for this land. Because of zoning restrictions, it has been impossible for them to secure an adequate price. He is offering the land to us for #4,000* Several years ago, when we were checking land for a Jewish Center in Mattapan, Dave Kahn and Ed Sidman informed me that this property was considered. I do not believe that H'Adrath Israel was ready to sell at that time. Directly opposite Temple Beth Hillel and next to a school, it would aopear to be an ideal site for a communal project. Would you be e;ood enough to arrange to have the land looked over? If it is worthwhile, we might investigate the possibilities for long-range planning of a branch building. I am sure you will want to get in touch with Dave Krhn, who was in charge of the Jewish Centers Association's quest for a Mattapan site, and with Ed Sidman.
