January 28, 1976 Mr. Mitchell Marcus Chairman National & Local Relations Committee Combined Jewish Philanthropies 72 Franklin Street Boston, MA Re: American Friends of Haifa University Dear Mitch: This letter will serve as notification to the National and Local Relations Committee of recent efforts to establish a Greater Boston Chapter of the American Friends of Haifa University. Recently, a group of local leaders, including both of the undersigned, Neil Cooper, Joel Berkowitz and Ron Kaplan met with Dr. Aryeh Nesher, Vice President of Haifa University and David M. Winter, National Director of the American Friends, to discuss the possibility of such a chapter. Among the communities which presently have such chapters are Los Angeles, Houston, Miami and Chicago. The purpose of a local chapter would be to familiarize Boston Jewry with the varied programs of the University and to assist in the raising of funds for scholarships. The annual chapter membership fee would be $100. On Sunday evening, February 29, 1976, we are planning a meeting at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Ronald Kaplan as the initial effort to interest a wide range of members of the Boston Jewish community in forming a Greater Boston Chapter. Dr. Nesher will be with us that evening. If our effort to establish a formal Chapter is successful, we further plan to conduct a limited campaign for scholarship funds in May-June, 1976. The amount of the individual scholarships which we would seek from both members of the local Chapter and from a limited number of members of the general community is one hundred ($100.00) dollars to one thousand ($1,000.00) dollars, with a tentative total goal not to exceed twenty-five thousand ($25,000.00) dollars. A list of those individuals from whom we would solicit such scholarship funds will be submitted to your committee in advance of our campaign. Furthermore, each individual contributor will be made aware that his scholarship shall in no way affect his annual support to the Combined Jewish Philanthropies Israel Emergency Fund.
