THINKING OUT LOUD See Schlossberg's Column On Page Five Warnings Off New Mideast War Grow Vol. XXIX No. 51, Thursday August 8,1974 Price Ten Cents Sherman To Head CJP Trades And Professions Div. Joel B. Sherman has assumed the chairmanship of the Trades and Professions Division for the 1975 Campaign of the Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Greater Boston and Israel Emergency Fund. In making the announcement, Sherman H. Starr, 1975 general campaign chairman, noted: "At 34, Joel Sherman is one of the youngest men ever to head this important CJP division. But his accomplishments as a dynamic campaigner and his record of service to the community have earned him this key position." Mr. Sherman and his wife, Sue, returned this Monday from Israel. There they participated in a United Jewish Appeal National Campaign Cabinet Study Seminar, along with several fellow Bostonians; Mr. and Mrs. Bert Rabinowitz, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Cohen, Mr. and Mrs. Bertram R. Paley and Dr. and Mrs. Leon Jick. Relating his experiences in Israel, Mr. Sherman said: "We met on a personal level, with Israelis from all walks of life. What was clear is that the average Israeli feels much more strongly than ever before that there is a real interdependence between the people of Israel and the Jews of Joel B. Sherman America. There is an understanding that American Jews and Israelis are truly one. "Interestingly enough," he noted, "we discovered a growing recognition among Israelis of the importance of building strong Jewish communities here in the United States, with particular emphasis on Jewish education. "We also saw how the Yom Kippur War and its aftermath have wor- sened all the problems that already existed. The number one problem, Continued on Page Six Allon Says War Is Not Inevitable NEW YORK, (JTA)--Israeli Foreign Minister Yigal Allon told a group of American Jewish leaders that while a new Middle East war is possible it is not inevitable. He said that while preparing for war Israel must also seek to avert a war by political means. Allon's remarks were made at an off-the-record meeting with members of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations at the Jewish Agency office here just before his departure for Israel. According to a source, Allon stressed that the United States has no Mideast peace plan and will not try to impose a settlement on Israel. He said his meetings with Secretary of State Henry A. Kissinger, Defense Secretary James R. Schlessinger, Treasury Secretary William Simon and Vice president Gerald Ford had been very good, constructive, useful and fruitful with satisfactory results. Allon reportedly said that "some of these results are already in my pocket" and expressed con- fidence that the others were being considered favorably. The com- munique also reportedly called for the FLO to be represented at the Geneva Mideast peace talks on the same basis as other participants. The communique, in effect recognizes the FLO as the sole representative of the Falestinians. Despite this announcement there was some speculation here that the USSR's support of the FLO was more perfunctory than all-embracing in view of the fact that Arafat was not received either by the high Communist Farty officials or by Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko. Peres Colls Situation Grove TEL AVIV, (JTA)-Fears of a new Middle East war erupting before the end of the year continued unabated over the weekend with Defense Minister Shimon Peres declaring that the graveness of the situation "compels us to present the harsh truth to the people." Peres said the Arab states have swung into preparation for war aided by an intensive Soviet arms supply especially to Syria and Iraq. His remarks to a meeting of Labor Party branch leaders at Beit Berl came a day after he had charged that Soviet helicopters had violated Israeli airspace in an attempt to photograph Israeli naval vessels and that Egypt and Syria have been violating the disengagement agreement. War warnings were also issued by Information Minister Aharon Yariv and Premier Yitzhak Rabin. Yariv said that even if Israel is ready to make major concessions to the Arab states this would not ensure peace since the major obstacle is the refusal by the Arabs to accept Israel's right to exist. But he stressed that every opportunity should be made to reach a political settlement since there is no guarantee that another war will bring peace. Rabin late last week warned that if substantive action for peace is not taken soon, the danger of war will increase. He said that a possible date for the resumption of war could be in October or November when the mandate of the United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) must be renewed. The Arabs, he said, may use this provision as a pretext to create a situation to force the UNEF to leave the buffer areas and thereby free their military forces to unleash another attack against Israel. Tackeff, president of the exclusive- club, which is comprised of individuals whose pace-setting purchases of Israel Bonds provide vital in- vestment funds for maintaining Israel's domestic growth.
