"T B'NAI potlpt Vol. II, No. 10 JUNE, 1947 Lynn, Mass. He Knew Us When FROM THE DAY WE WERE BORN, Frank Goldman of Lowell, new international president of B'nai B'rith, has had a warm spot in his heart for Greater Lynn Lodge. Here is a new photo taken on Feb. 22, 1941 — hitherto unpublished — showing Mr. Goldman, right (who was then a vice president of the Supreme Lodge) presenting the Lodge charter to Dr. William E. Shub, left (who was then our first vice president). Mr. Goldman was one of the principal speakers at the Lodge Charter Night banquet at the Hotel Edison a little more than five years ago. Fewer Jews Enrolled In College WASHINGTON, D.C., (B'nai B'rith News Service) — Jewish students constitute 8.2 percent of the total enrollment in colleges and universities of the United States and Canada, according to preliminary findings of the Decennial Census of Jewish College Students, Leon J. Obermayer, chairman of the B'nai B'rith Vocational Service Commission, has announced. The percentage is based on enrollment data of 1,565 schools out of 1,720 which akes the census 91 percent complete. Additional returns are now being received, though they are expected to have (See College, Page 4, Col. 3) Frank Goldman Elected B'nai B'rith President B'nai B'rith lodges and chapters in District One have hailed with genuine satisfaction the election of Frank Goldman of Lowell as international president of B'nai B'rith at the final session of the Supreme Lodge triennial convention in Washington last month. Mr. Goldman is personally well known to several of the local members, particularly those who attended the lodge's charter night dinner in February, 1941, and at subsequent ADL and war service meetings in Boston. Similarly, delegates of the Lynn lodge and chapter saw and met Mr. Goldman at all the conventions of the district in the past five years. The new president of B'nai B'rith was one of the principal guests at, the lodge charter night banquet Feb. 22, 1941. He was particularly active in war service work of the Order during World War II and was one of the first to see exceptional merit in the "Serve-A-Ship" program as originally suggested to B'nai B'rith by Colonel Elliott A. Niles of Boston, former head of war service in District One. Succeeds Monsky He succeeds the late Henry (See Goldman, Page 4, Col. 1) Joint Social Ends Season On June W Lodge and Chapter will join hands for the season's finale — a cold cut supper and "Amateur Night" entertainment — in the Center cafeteria and Garfield Room, Thursday night, June 19, at 7 o'clock sharp. Plans are somewhat indefinite, as this issue of The Times-Spotlight goes to press, but the committee on arrangements promises a lot of fun, in the traditional spirit of B'nai B'rith socials. Double postal-cards are again being mailed out to members of both Lodge and Chapter to insure reservations for the supper. The supper will be served at nominal cost. It is being prepared by members of the Chapter, with the assistance of Lodge committee aides. "Amateur Night" promises to be a howl. A dozen acts are planned, including singers, comedians, magicians and gagsters. This will be strictly "home stuff", with every indication that the audience will enjoy it more than anything seen at regular meetings in months. The joint committee includes: Helen Millman, Morris Sogoloff, Helen Zimman, Rozelda Olanoff, Lillian Katz, Estelle Cohen, Sylvia Weinswig and Abe Brody, Ed Jaffee and Bernard Wenn. Convention Highlights By ABE BRODY The Toronto B'nai B'rith deserves heaps of praise for the super job as host . . . Everything was done to make the visiting delegates feel comfortable . . . Our Abe Glovsky's message as retiring president was the shortest in convention history . . . and good, too. We're certain that Frank Goldman will make an able successor to the late Henry Monsky . . . The delegates were deeply impressed with his address at the principal dinner of the convention. It's pretty certain that the North Shore will be permitted to set up its own zone within the Central New England Council ... The Sa- ( See Convention, Page 3, Col. 3)
