FROMt Meier Steinbrink. Chairman Board of Directors FCR IJ&EDIATE RELEASE Eastern Regional Office Anti-Defamation League Tuesday, February 6, 1945 212 Fifth Avenue Mew York City 10 Supreme Court Justice Meier Steinbrink, as Chairman of the Board of Direotors of the Eastern Region of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith, today charged that Dr. Harlan H. Horner, Secretary of tho Council on Dental Education of the American Dental Association, submitted a confidential report to Chancellor Harry VT. Chase, of New York University, urging a reduction in the number of Jewish students tc be adnitted to tho College of Dentistry of that institution. Justice Steinbrink made public an affidavit by Dr. Harry M. Scldin, President of the Alumni Association of the New York University College of Dentistry, quoting the language of the report. At the same timo he called upon Columbia Uni\ersity, Hew York University and the American Dental Association to repudiate the reports made by Dr. Homer. Dr. Soldin stated in his affidavit tliat the confidential report contained the following languages "Admission., ...Viewed broadly, however, it must bo noted that the student body is made up overwnolmingly, of one racial strain, und is not even a cross section of the various racial groups to be found in Greater New York. 1'oroovor, tho greater proportion of tho students are prepared in a limited nunbor of local liberal arts colleges. A certain narrowness of outlook and rigidity of mind must inevitably rts.lt. The institution is provincial and parochial to a high degree. The environment of tho college may moke this situation unavoidable, and yet a college of dentistry located in tho great city of How York, under the auspices of a distinguished University, might serve the entire profession more i ffr.ctivfly if it undertook to reoruit its students from a larger group of representative liberal arts colleges, fron more extensive geographical areas, and from more diversified racial {"roups. "Facultyt ...It was pointed out undor the discussion of the admission procedures , that the students came from a limited number of liberal arts colleges in a restricted area, and represent nainly only one of tho racial strains of greater New York. This is also mainly true of the i acuity. It almost amounts to a species of educational autointoxication." Dr. Seldin declared., "The phrase 'one racial strain' means Jew ish students. Until tho issuance or adoption of this roport, there had been no policy of discrimination at liew York University Dental College." It was learned by the League, a department of the B'nai B'rith, America oldest and largest Jewish service orga nization, that Dr. Allan T. Newman, for fifteen years Dean of the New York Univorsity Dental College, had resigned immediately after the Horner report was submitted. Further, so far as the League was able to ascertain. New York University did not reject the Horner recommendation. A special report, issued to Columbia University, by the Council on Dental Education, urged similar discriminatory policy in regard to admissions at that institution.
