Report of Meeting at Hotel Kenmore .woonbor 4, 1944 at eight p.m. This meeting was oalled by Ur. Grosborg to attompt to detemine the attitude of Jewish citizens toward the sevoral non-seotarian organisations that appealed to individuals in our group for funds frcn time to time* Invited to the meeting were tho Jewish members of the Massachusetts Committee of Catholics, Protestants and Jews and members of the Community Counoil* s Administrative Committee and the Committee on Misleading Practices of Community iAmd-rtaising. In attendanoe worej Dr. Charles P. Wilinsky, Ben Ulin, Judge Kaplan, David U. rratohmak er, Joseph Self art, F. Frank Voronberg, Jaoob L. Wiseman, William Oilman, Ben G. Shapiro, Caspor U« Grosborg, Abraham Close, Louis II. Salvage, Loon Arkin, Horbort Ehrmann, Peter LI. Loavitt and Robert K. Segal. Mr. Grosberg stated the purpose of the meeting and established as the goals soughti 1. That the Counoil be in a position to advise constituents as to tho value of various non-seotarian organizations, and 2. That the Counoil be in position to give constituents an idea of what aize contributions they might make. Mr. Grosberg said that many individuals have asked him questions about non-seotarian groups and their appeals for funds. He detailed the case history of the NCCJ and its appeal for money and asserted that he felt that It was up to the Counoil to evaluate such agenoies and arrive at fundamental principles for measuring their worth. Mr. Vorenberg askedt "Assuming you reach a decision, would you publicize it widely?" Judge Kaplan stated that he thought tho question wast "Should Jewish aupport fall into some specific range and not be larger than non-Jewish support?" Mr. Wiseman said he didn't think that the counoil could oontrol the amount of Jewish giving. Mr. Grosborg replied that it was not a question of oontrol. He said first we must not aooopt the worthiness of an organization as a premise* then got an idea of proposals* then deoide what part the Jews should play, and then decide how to oontrol the giving. He said further that he felt that most men in the community would weloomo suoh a program. Mr. Leavitt askedi "Would it not be in order for the Counoil to make a direct approach to non-seotarian organizations asking for thoir entire programs, budgets, etc. Judge Kaplan saidt "My understanding is the real issue is whether to oontrol Jewish giving." Mr. Vorenberg saidt "Can't we build up in the community an understanding that tha Counoil study these agenoies and thoir noeds and has available information-gathering servioe."
