JANUARY "27 A_d Bill Dictator Measure,1£& Says Short at Faneuil Hall Congressman Denounces Roosevelt For 'Most Preposterous Proposal' Calling the "lease-lend legislation ipatiently on the sidelines, will step nothing but a dictator bill that will!in and plant a.social revolution in put all the power of the Government in the hands of one man in violation of the Constitution," Congressman Dewey-J. Short of Missouri last night declared: "God help us that we. don't set up a Hitler here to get rid of one 4000 miles away." \ Speaking at Faneuil Hall before an audience of almost 1000 persons, •that.continually rose in' shouts of approval, he bitterly criticized Prcs- the ruin'and chaos that will remain." "The only thing we will get out of war will be greater debts, deeper depression and more graveyards— but not by my vote." he said. "Never will I send-an American" youth to fight in •countries, where democracy is dead. I'm going to fight to keep them here to protect this country's democracy." Assails "Rubber Stamps" . i Assailing the "nit-wits, the rubber ident Roosevelt for taking "thc third- ; stamps in Congress."- Short shouted ,term election as a mandate to offer .the Congress • of the United' States the most preposterous proposal ever offered iri a democratic government " "We don't have to set up a one-man government to keep the country out of war. Wc.don't have to change the' Constitution to bring back pros | Waving his arms and dashingn>erity any more than we have to from one part of the platform to kill a dog to kill its fleas. Fears of German invasion of this country he discarded as absurd. "How can Hitler cross thousands of miles when he can't even cross the English Channel?" he asked.
