. William H. Clark 6 West Hill Place Elm Street Boston, Mass. Concord, Massachusetts . U, April 1955 Dear Bill: Our Bishop Nash writes me that in his opinion a letter I wrote to Rabbi Shubow "shot-fed unmistakable signs of that unfortunate anti-Semitism which is so common among American conservatives". He does not specify in what way, as I had asked him to; nor does he indicate what he means by "American conservative". And Rabbi Shubow has not yet acknowledged it. Herewith is a copy of the complete Shubow letter that you may judge this unfair and unfounded charge for yourself - in context. I am not alone among Episcopalians who strongly disagree with the "American liberal" stand our Bishop takes on non-Church topics, past and present. Personally, I deplore his lack of knowledge on,the unpleasant facts of Communist and Socialist influences in our daily lives - a lack that becomes so obvious when you consider how he supported the nation-wide, Red-sponsored campaign to save the Rosenbergs from the just rewards-of their treason; how he virtually advocated wide use of the Fifth Amendment by all,-witnesses in order to sabotage and discredit duly authorized Congressional investigating committees (thus effectively hampering their efforts to track down the traitors in our midst); how he consorts with like birds of a feather such as Lothrop and the Community Church; how he backs the Oxnams and the Joe Fletchers in their muddled thinking; how he is tempted to defend the Hisses, the Oppenheimers, the Furrys and the "pinkos" in education; and how he would like (without knowing just why) to see this nation give up a lot more of its sovereignty to the cunning, foreign treachery of the United Nations. His latest mental aberration is his gratuitous, public advice that we let the Red Chinese take those two important military stepping-stones to Formosa,- the Matsus and Quemoy. While I disagree with his stands, there are some who wholeheartedly and gleefully agree with them: The Communists. This may come as a shock to our good Bishop. That is because he hasn't the time to inform himself about the "party line". I'll bet a brand new copy of Hunt's THE UNTOLD STORY OF DOUGLAS MACARTHUR" against an unexpurgated edition of THE COMMUNIST MANIFESTO that our Bishop favors Sen. George's suggestion that we have another senseless, dreary, servile, appeasing confab with the Commie leaders of the Kremlin. And how do the Reds feel about the George suggestion? You guessed it, they're all for iti (See DAILY WORKER editorial of 22 March). And why? Because, in- varibly, the Communists take at such conferences and just as invariably we give. The most amazing part about it is that such an idiotic proposal should receive any serious consideration at this time, of all times, just after release of the Yalta documents, which are so damaging that the worst parts had to be deleted. If ever there were an Exhibit "A" for passage of seme such legislation as the Bricker Amendment, the Yalta documents, uncensored, would be it. Does our Bishop favor the Bricker Amendment? To answer that, here's a helpful hint: The official Communist stand on numerous occasions in the past has been unqualifiedly against it. It still is. I have never been one to mince words - not even over Communist propaganda in a script for a Christmas pageant at Trinity Church, Concord. If the house is burning down, I speak out. And I don't wait to argue about it with those who try %fi stop me from warning the inmates. One doesn't have to shout "Firel" (except to the deaf) because shouting sometimes causes panic; but one does have to speak plainly enough for all to hear. Those who get in the way of the firefighters cannot, and must not, be allowed to stand on ceremony. Either they help put out the fire (if they know how to fight a fire) or betake themselves off behind the fire lines where they belong, and stay there. We can learn much from the first three chapters of Isaiah and from Christ's "Woe unto you, scribes, pharisees, hypocrites". If Bishop Nash would only stick to his field of Theology, I think he would be far more helpful to Christianity and to sound Americanism and less unwittingly helpful to the enemies of our wonderful Country. With sorrow and sincerity, I pray that he will do so. Enclosure. Robertson Jr The Rt. Rev. Norman B. Nash Kenneth O. Kooertson, Jr. All Members of Congress - And Others
