About this collection

Browse This Collection

This collection contains selected account books, receipts, letters, and other business records from the R. Stanton Avery Special Collections at the New England Historic Genealogical Society. These records are often used by scholars studying economic and social history, but they are also valuable to genealogists because of the clues they can provide about an ancestor's daily life. Business records, such as account books, reveal details about the goods and services that were available to the people in a particular time and place. They reveal what local residents bought and sold, and how they paid for those goods. Business records can also provide proof that an individual lived in a certain area and did business with the merchants there.
