The R. Stanton Avery Special Collections at the New England Historic Genealogical Society contains the papers of professional and amateur genealogists, records of family associations, and original documents acquired individually and in collections of family papers. This digital collection includes selected finding aids and indexes for manuscript collections from Special Collections.

Finding aids are documents that describe the contents and organization of manuscript collections. Although a few finding aids contain complete indexes of all the people and places mentioned in a collection, it is more common for finding aids to provide a general overview of a manuscript collection, highlighting the most common subjects and families discussed. Finding aids usually include a scope and content note describing what the collection contains and what it is about; a historical note about the person, family, or organization that created the collection; an overview of how the collection is organized; and a list of the folders or items in the collection, and where they are located.

Some of the materials described in these finding aids are available online as digital images, but most manuscript collections are only available to NEHGS research and contributing members at the NEHGS library. For additional information on accessing manuscripts, see the Special Collections section of our website, or contact library@nehgs.org.
